Weight Loss at The A-Z General Practice

Holistic, sustainable support

Achieving a healthy weight can transform your long-term wellbeing – whether that’s improving energy and mobility or reducing the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

As a Certified Partner of the National Medical Weight Loss Programme, we offer bespoke, doctor-led clinics designed to help you achieve and sustain your ideal weight in a safe and medically supervised environment.

We’ll take time to understand the whole picture. We’ll explore the potential underlying causes of weight gain, calculate your basal metabolic rate, and design a plan that helps you feel satisfied while reducing calories safely. And, with ongoing guidance and optional medical treatments, we’ll help you towards sustainable, confident progress.

Recent NHS health data shows that nearly two-thirds of UK adults are overweight or living with obesity – a condition that significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and certain cancers. It can also contribute to fatigue, joint discomfort, and a reduced quality of life.

Achieving a healthy weight is one of the most effective ways to enhance your long-term wellbeing. Our experienced clinicians work closely with you to create a personalised plan designed to help you meet your goals sustainably. When combined with a healthy lifestyle, clinically proven weight loss treatments can be a powerful tool for transformation.

Your journey starts with a doctor-led consultation to explore your health, lifestyle and goals. We’ll assess your metabolic needs, check for any contributing medical factors, and build a personalised plan that supports safe, steady weight loss.

We can help guide you through calorie management, intermittent fasting options, food-swap strategies, alcohol-awareness support and safe movement plans. We’ll also work with you to create habits that fit naturally into your daily life.

We’ll review your progress monthly, including weight and waist circumference measurements. This ensures your plan stays effective and responsive to your changing needs.

Yes. Where medically appropriate, we may prescribe evidence-based treatments such as Mounjaro and Wegovy. These GLP-1 receptor agonists are always used alongside lifestyle changes and under close clinical supervision.

Our clinic supports adults seeking safe, medically supervised weight management – whether you’re beginning your journey or looking to overcome a plateau. We’ll assess your personal situation and advise whether medical treatments or lifestyle-focused approaches are most suitable.

Prescription treatment for Weight loss

Mounjaro

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a clinically approved, prescription treatment that can support significant and sustained weight loss when paired with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It works by helping you feel fuller for longer, reducing appetite and supporting healthier eating patterns.

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable treatment that reduces appetite and slows digestion, helping you naturally lower your calorie intake. It acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors – two hormones that influence hunger and energy balance.

Mounjaro can be prescribed to:

Adults with a BMI of 30 or above

Adults with a BMI of 27 or above who also have weight-related health conditions such as:

  • Prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure or elevated cholesterol
  • Cardiovascular disease or history of stroke
  • PCOS, obstructive sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease or osteoarthritis
  • Chronic back pain or gallbladder disease

Mounjaro should always be used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Mounjaro is not suitable for those who are:

  • Pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients
  • With a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)

You should also inform us if you have:

  • Pancreatic, liver, kidney or gallbladder problems
  • Severe gastrointestinal issues
  • Diabetic retinopathy or heart rhythm disorders
  • Diabetes – and are taking insulin or sulfonylureas

If it’s within four days of your scheduled dose, you should take it as soon as you can. After four days, skip the missed dose and continue with your usual schedule. Never take two doses within three days of each other.

Clinical studies show Mounjaro can support substantial weight loss when combined with diet and activity changes. In trials, many participants achieved 5–20% weight loss or more over 72 weeks. Individual results vary, and your clinician will support you in setting realistic goals.

Injectable medication for weight loss

Wegovy

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable medication that mimics a natural hormone (GLP-1) that regulates appetite and food intake. This helps people to feel satisfied with smaller meals. When paired with healthy habits, it can support meaningful, gradual weight loss.

Wegovy is licensed for adults with a higher BMI and can also reduce cardiovascular risk in people with established heart disease. We’ll look at your individual circumstances and help you decide whether it’s the right option for your needs.

Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide, but they differ in the uses they’re approved for:

  • Wegovy is licensed specifically for weight loss and cardiovascular risk reduction.
  • Ozempic is licensed for the management of type 2 diabetes.

Wegovy is also available in a wider range of doses, including higher strengths suitable for dedicated weight management.

Wegovy is prescribed to adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with associated conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or hypertension (high blood pressure).

It is not suitable for individuals who are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Allergic to semaglutide
  • With a personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2

If you have gallbladder issues, pancreatitis, thyroid conditions or kidney problems, then we would advise caution. It may be that Wegovy isn’t a suitable treatment for you.

In clinical studies, adults using Wegovy lost an average of around 15kg over 68 weeks when combining Wegovy with lifestyle changes. In addition to reducing weight, in some cases Wegovy has been shown to:

  • Improve blood sugar control
  • Enhance mobility and energy levels
  • Support cardiovascular health
  • Boost self-confidence and mental wellbeing

Your treatment will typically begin with a low introductory dose, gradually increasing over several months to the full maintenance dose. This approach allows your body to adjust and reduces the likelihood of side effects.

Common reported side effects are usually mild and don’t last long. They include:

  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Headache, dizziness, or fatigue
  • Heartburn or indigestion

If you experience persistent or severe effects, get in contact and let us know.

If you’re using diabetes medications such as sulfonylureas, you should check your blood sugar levels regularly. If they are low (hypoglycaemia), get in touch – we may need to make some adjustments to your treatment.
